Doing A Broadway Musical … Day 57

Thursday …

Here is a photo of a long time fan of Hart to Hart and supporter that goes way back to Love Letters and the Sarah Siddons Award, who even managed to let RJ know that we were all going to be together tonight.

Today we celebrated Jerry Mitchell’s birthday … a day early as his birthday is actually tomorrow, Jan. 15.

With only four performances left of our Chicago run, the director, composer, lyricist and writers will now go back to New York to work on many aspects of the show that they think will make it better than it already is, and we all look forward to reconvening in the fall.

Gotta go, GOTTA DANCE.

Doing A Broadway Musical … Day 56

Here is a photo with some of the fans that came to see the Saturday night performance.

Mary Lou, my darling friend and colleague at Sears during the years we
produced the line of clothing called the Stefanie Powers Collectables, sent these beautiful flowers. Thank you, Mary Lou.

These booties were hand made by my fan Marcia’s mom, who gave Marcia a birthday present of a ticket to come see our show with friends for the second time, so they drove from Indiana. Thank you mom!

Among my fan guests were two supporters of the William Holden Wildlife Foundation, who came from Salt Lake City, as well as others from Ohio.
It was lovely to see them all and their generosity and time to the WHWF is greatly appreciated. Thank you all.

Sunday was a matinee and tomorrow is a DAY OFF.

Gotta go, GOTTA DANCE.

Doing A Broadway Musical … Day 53

Thursday …

Last night I was nursing an infection which has made its way around our cast so I opted for antibiotics … a hot toddy … and, after having done two performances early to bed – so no blog.

Today we assembled in the theatre for more additions and subtractions to the play and the music. Haven Burton was given new lyrics and complicated musical harmonics to cope with, along with added dialogue that she had to learn immediately and perform tonight. It is such a difficult task to make changes to dialogue and music once you have established a certain rhythm, but Haven performed all the changes beautifully and deserved every bit of the applause she received while taking her bow.

After the show I met with a fan club member, Jeanne, who made her first airplane flight of her life just to come see me in this show. Jeanne was petrified about flying but she managed to make the trip so she deserves some applause as well.

Tomorrow there will be more changes awaiting us so …

Gotta go, GOTTA DANCE.

Doing A Broadway Musical … Day 52

Tuesday …

We only have 2 more weeks in Chicago so it is an ideal time for all of the creative juices of the writers to have an opportunity to try out new material that will ultimately benefit the show since as of the 17th of this month we close and will not reconvene until the end of August. So today we tried some changes that may or may not stay with the show, and the rest of the week will probably contain the same exercises.

We had a wonderful audience tonight, they were enthusiastic and very vocal, and that is what counts.

Gotta go, GOTTA DANCE.

Doing A Broadway Musical … Day 51

Saturday / Sunday …

This weekend, and these past weeks, has been a parade of lovely fans – some new, but many longtime and loyal who came from all over the states and Europe to see the show, bringing with them wonderful gifts for both me and the WHWF. I am so very grateful to all of them.

As we enter this new year I wish all of us first and foremost good health, and all the good things of life.

Here is a little book made by a fan, Lisa Barsalona, who created a lovely compilation of photos that is the envy of our producers. Thank you Lisa.

Also thanks to Alex McLean-Williams (seen below) who is my friend and British agent who came to see the show and spent the New Year holiday with me.

Doing A Broadway Musical … Day 50

This was a short blog from yesterday that I didn’t get up in time …

I had a long and overdue sleep because we had a late call at the theatre.
The show went well with only a few notes from the director and the audience continues to enjoy it … I had visitors from Germany, Kentucky and locally … how wonderful to be so supported by so many.  Thank you all.
Wednesday …
After today’s evening show I met Dancy Bateman, a fan for years who gave me this gorgeous bridle for Bowie after seeing our show.  Thank you Dancy.

Doing A Broadway Musical … Day 49

Monday …

Our official opening night so we had the day to tweak then perform.

The after party was only a block away. Through the slush of the melting snow, but typical of our generous producers, the party was lovely and everyone fluffed up for the occasion and they looked gorgeous … it was great to blow off some steam.

Doing A Broadway Musical … Day 48

Sunday Matinee …

I think we were all happy that there were not two shows today. Actually, it felt wonderful to finish while there was still some light on the horizon, otherwise we seem to enter the theatre in daylight … which is our only glimpse of the sun … and not leave until it’s dark outside. As I heaved a sigh of relief in my dressing room after the show I was reminded by my wig master of the saying that was credited to the great comedy writer Larry Gelbart, who famously said “If Hitler’s still alive, I hope he’s out of town with a musical”. We have more changes to go before we finish Chicago, but I’m sure when we do close here it will be the show that we open in New York.

I was surprised by some friends who got last minute tickets to today’s show. Poppy and Paige took this photo from the rear of the balcony of the finale.

We went across the street for dinner and ran into a long table comprised of some of the original dancers our show was based on. They have been hosted by our producers to come to Chicago for our official opening tomorrow night. Tomorrow is the night the critics come and the local celebrities and it is “Opening Night”.

More on that tomorrow …

Gotta go, GOTTA DANCE.
